Cypher is this film’s Judas, the one to betray Neo and ultimately lead to his death. Some analysts referred to the dinner that Cypher had with Agent Smith has a changed version of the “Last Supper.” Cypher’s name also resonates with the name Lucifer, and Cypher has a goatee and wore red, a color associated with Lucifer, earlier in the film. Lucifer is also of course known for being the jealous angel and Cypher is indeed jealous of Neo, considering his unrequited “love” for Trinity.
There is a major theme conveyed through the character as well: “ignorance is bliss”. Discovering the real world doesn’t exactly meet his expectations infuriates Cypher, and he completely regrets taking the red pill, while blaming Morpheus.
